Yes.  I have bought many, many of these.   I use them to create a wall of toy storage.  I stack 2 double toy cubbies on the bottom and then I use this unit as the 3rd/top unit.   I have 4 of these “3 tall” across one wall in my basement and the same 3 tall set up in my child’s bedroom.   So, in all, I’ve bought 8 of the double toy cubbies, and 4 of the bookshelf units.   They hold up very well and are very sturdy.   The ones in my basement have been heavily used for 10 years and still look almost new. I actually only install the middle vertical divider in this unit and don’t install the additional horizontal and vertical divider/shelf on the left/right side.   Instead I bought fabric square bins (the collapsible kind from Target that are available in lots of colors and patterns) and use it for additional toy storage for things like legos, small toys, arts & crafts, etc,    The bins for perfectly and give a polished look to these toy storage units.  

As an alternative to having the horizontal shelf installed on that side of the unit, I don’t install either the horizontal shelf on the left or the vertical divider on the right half.  This allows me more flexibility in how I use the unit.  I use it for a bookshelf for books of all size, but in most of these units that I have installed, I put fabric bins in them for toy storage.   I have 6 of these units in my house.   I put one of these units on top of 2 stacked double toy bins.    so, I stack them 3 high. 2 units below as open toy storage and then this unit above as a book shelf with a single vertical divider in the middle or with square fabric bins (the kind that are sold at Target that you can collapse/fold fit perfectly) and look very clean/tidy.    But, to answer the question you originally asked, the opening is 15.5” and the horizontal shelf is 1/2” thick installed in the middle of the opening, leaving approx. 7.5” of height above and below the shelf.
